Develop your knowledge and understanding of hematuria in guinea pigs in this one-part course.

This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes of hematuria in guinea pigs, including:

Cause – cystitis, urolithiasis. Note: blood will always be found in a urine sample obtained by manual expression and is no the same as the guinea pig voiding hematuria.
Signs – blood in the urine may be stranguria; guinea pigs may have anorexia and changes in behaviour, water consumption.
Diagnosis – urinalysis, ultrasonography, radiography.
Treatment – if cystitis: antibiotics preferably based on culture and sensitivity; if urolithiasis: likely require cystotomy to remove stones.
Prognosis – good for uncomplicated cystitis; guarded for urolithiasis, as many of these do recur.
