This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of beak and claw overgrowth in reptiles, including:
Cause – inappropriate substrate with no opportunities to wear down nails and/or fed an inappropriate diet.
Signs – visual elongation of the nails and beak.
Diagnosis – clinical examination.
Treatment – correction of size and shape of beak using a high-speed spinning tool; slipping should be reserved for nails only.
Prognosis – good depending on degree of deformity.
