This module looks at pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of pneumonia in guinea pigs, including:
Cause – bacteria, viruses, or foreign bodies/materials.
Signs – dyspnea, wheezing/labored breathing, tachypnea, lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, exercise intolerance, coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or ocular discharge, fever.
Diagnosis – radiography, bloodwork, microbiology, cytology.
Treatment – oxygen therapy, nebulization, fluid therapy, diet to keep gut functioning, antimicrobials, bronchodilators.
Prognosis – based on the severity and chronicity of pneumonia when presented. Guarded to the grave.
